DIY Dr. Seuss Quotes Canvas

I've always wanted to complete this DIY project but just haven't had the time to get around to it until recently. With Dr. Seuss' birthday having just passed as well as March being National Reading Awareness month, this was the perfect time to complete my project. 

I wanted to share it with you all, so that you too can try this out at home. It will be great as wall art for your kids bedroom or playroom. 

Here's a list of materials I used to make the Dr. Seuss Quote Canvas:

• Large canvas
• I used a left over canvas that I had in the house already. I just painted over what was on it
• Acrylic Paint
• White, Blue and dark Gray

• Paint brushes
• Different sizes help. I used thinner ones to paint the quotes and thicker ones to paint the background

• Painters tape
• Graphite Paper
• Plastic Paint cups 
• (Optional) 

 If you are using an old canvas (like I did), start off by painting over the previous painting that is on there. My husband originally used this canvas to paint a lion family, but never completed it. This also explains the texture of the canvas and why it looks "bumpy". He wanted to create a textured background. I personally don't mind the texture. 

Next, create your sections and separate them with the painters tape. I measured everything with a ruler to make sure the sections would be even. Also, it helps to know exactly how many quotes you want to use, so you'll know how many sections to create. (I know, duh, but it never hurts to explain everything). 

Again, the texture that you see was created from the previous painting that I painted over. I personally didn't mind the look of it.

Next, paint each section with alternating colors - to create a pattern. Here, I used blue and white. You can also use red and white to stay along with the Dr. Seuss theme (or which ever color you prefer). Once the alternating colors have dried, go back and re-tape small sections between the colors to create a border. For this, I used dark gray. Black also works well, I just used gray because I had that color left over from a previous project. 

Next, print out the quotes that you want to use onto plain paper. Make sure that the font size and style are exactly how you want it to come out on the canvas. Take your graphite paper and tape it to the canvas. Cut out the words and arrange them onto the graphite paper, taping them into place. Once you've set up the wording correctly, start tracing. Lift the paper and graphite paper off of the canvas and you will see that the quotes have transferred over. 

Next, take your paint and fill in the words.

This is what you'll end up with. This was a fun weekend project! The kids loved the way it came out.
